Funny how just hearing the wood thrush trill and seeing the open fields where white-tailed deer bound and the sleek weasel slinks across my path at a distance, brings peace to my soul enough to last the whole day. But the recharging doesn't last forever. This regular walk has to be taken again the very next day, hence, the name of the artwork: "The Daily Constitutional." 40"T x 30"W.

The Golden Season
Original 1/1 (40"T x 30"W) oil painting, depicting a summer field of freshly-bound hay bales in Cumberland County, Maine.
I shot the reference for this artwork on the day my son returned from serving a two year mission for our church to Costa Rica. My heart was so full of joy and gratitude that morning as I ran errands to get ready for his home-coming.
When I drove past this field, I had to pull off the road, get out of my car, and walk out into those fields to capture the fresh glowing haystacks in the summer sun. Those bales of someone's hard work were symbolic in a way. The field of souls where my son had labored had been white, was threshed and brought in, and had been safely gathered to Christ. My boy had worked hard, loved even harder, and was coming home. He had found meaning in teaching others about His Savior. My mama heart was brimming with joy. This piece is named then, The Golden Season. I hope this original finds the home where it will bring light, peace, and depth of meaning to the beholders therein. It will take a piece of my heart with it.

Beauty of the Bone

MacWorth Island
Beach days ground us, and make time stop. Our phones die and we happily let them. Slathering sunscreen on children's shoulder's, noses, and ears is a welcome task. Beach-combing for sea glass, and keeping the sea gulls from stealing our sandwiches is the only work we do for those few hours. So grateful to live in a world where there are beach days to remind us to breathe, boogie board, hunt for treasures, and find sand dollars along the drift line--a reward for choosing to bond on the beach. So grateful for the Lord's stunning creations.

"Garden Queen"
Who can resist staring at a blue hydrangea? I'd tried to plant some out west but to no avail--the soil in our yard wasn't quite acidic enough. So you can imagine my delight when we moved to Maine and the first summer brought cobalt beauties blooming in abundance in our scrappy flower beds--dazzling us July through September! I never tire of walking out back just to sit in their presence and gaze at their azure dreaminess...to find anything blue growing in nature always feels so surreal.

Babyhood
Fiddlehead ferns start to spring up just after the forsythia and around the time of wild violets in Maine. Tightly-wound and Kelly green, these delicacies can be foraged and harvested along roadsides. The "fiddleheads" (so named because the fern's leaves start out all rolled up in what looks like the scroll of a violin) may be snipped from the stems, and sauteed with garlic, butter, salt, and pepper. Yum! They have a texture like asparagus, but with a waxy smoothness.
But what's even more delicious, is to leave these beauties alone along the roadside to watch them unfurl as the days grow balmy. With their tiny leaves reaching up to the sky, these ferns remind me of innocent newborns flailing about, waiting to be drawn into a parents' arms and snuggled.
This little pop of spring has been one of my favorite watercolors to paint. This is my smallest giclee print available and makes for cheery decor in a baby nursery, kitchen, or even in the bathroom. Bring a bit of springtime inside your home to lift your mood all year long.

Harbinger of Spring (Forsythia!)
Can you think of anything that alerts us more of spring than the movie-theater-popcorn-yellow blossoms of the cheery forsythia bush? I cannot. It's the first sign of color around my area of Maine during "Stick Season." You know...that stage of the year in New England when the rest of the world out west is already abloom with tulips and daffodils? But we on the east coast are still waiting amidst the drab barren branches of gray, for the girlish world to unfold in colorful buds and blossoms. But then, wait! Look! The heartening forsythia doesn't let us down after all. It returns every year to comfort disheartened Mainers with a bright splash of sunshine and hope. See, spring really does return year after year. Even this year. WHEW! Thank you, Mother Nature!

Childhood--Green Fern
Lush ferns growing along the creek bank draw us closer, inviting us to run our fingertips across their feathery tips. Uncurling in the cool shade, the curtain of fronds parts to give glimpses of the gurgling we could hear all along--the siren stream beckoning our inner seven year-old to slip off our shoes and wade sweaty feet into the icy bracing, feeling our way over the slippery stones.

Flower Child
Possibly the humblest of roadside flowers, but when studied closely, the daisy's elegance is striking and understated. Pristine papery petals crown a dizzying spiral center comprised of hundreds of disk florets. Each individual tubular flower in that golden center is capable of producing seeds. And when someone knows how to split a slit in the stem just so, the most stunning daisy chain crowns grace the heads of bare-footed bearers to make them look like woodland fairies.

Nasturtium Beauties
Watching a dramatic summer rain storm pelt down onto a bed of blooming nasturtium can be the best entertainment a summer afternoon affords. Especially with a child at your side under an umbrella. Use your phone to slow-mo capture the raindrops dancing off the waxy, circular leaves, then roll over the edges, and you'll find yourself mesmerized with this frenetic pattern of kinetic action.

Shades of Blue
The fascinating color transformation that blueberries undergo over the time-frame of one week during the ripening process is as good as watching a slow sunset. From pale green, to turquoise, to lavender, to cobalt, and finally navy. The sweetness deepens by the day. I will never tire of eating and picking fresh blueberries...

Fresh Faced Geranium
Every year when the world is thawing from winter and the landscape is still bleak and brown, I know the first step to banishing the blahs of a late New England spring, is to buy three vermillion geraniums from the nursery, haul out the empty clay pots, scoop them full of potting soil, and transplant a splash of joy into our yard. So that when the kids step off the bus every day after school, they'll see that spritz of scarlet and know, "Oh, yeah. Spring really is on its way after all." (Mom just has to coax it...)

To Make it Through the Winter
Years ago, a baker friend of mine mentioned how hard it felt to "make it through the winter" in Maine. This friend is so upbeat and kind--always serving other people, always working hard to make life beautiful and delectable for others. I felt I had to paint something cheery for her kitchen that would whisk her thoughts away to some place tropical on those long snowy days of being Hobbit-holed up in the kitchen creating cake towers for weddings. So thinking of how so many Mainers flee to Florida in the months of February and March, I painted this cluster of oranges on the branch, dripping with dew and happy to hang in the sunshine. I hope it still brings Melissa a taste of the tropical as she rolls out fondant or creates five tiered wonders topped with pomegranates. And I hope it brings joy and fresh thoughts to you if it ends up hanging in your kitchen too...

Emerald Empress--Luna Moth
The first week after my family moved to Maine, we accidentally left the exterior garage light on over night. When we woke in the morning, we discovered our garage door was covered with the most lovely and exotic-looking moths. There were zebra-striped ones, fucshia pinks, yellows and tans, and then the empress of them all--the sea foam green luna moth with a wingspan of 3-7". Its delicate wings were gossamer, and fluttered gently, landing often to rest.
I researched the moths and found they only live for about two weeks out of the year in the slim window of early summer. I felt we had been gifted a rare chance to behold one of these wondrous creations of our Lord. Moments like that stay with us a lifetime. Aren't we all so blessed to have gems of encounters with the flora and fauna of this grand world we call earth?

Remembrance of Truth
In this unsteady age, poppies are a reminder of what we were taught when we were small--right from wrong, decency from degeneracy, humility over pride, kindness over selfishness. These values aren't gone, but they do feel overshadowed in our noisy culture of brash leaders and war-driven conflicts. Poppies are a reminder of the sacrifices our forebears made to give us the freedom, peace, technology, education, rights to worship and believe as we do today. These billowy scarlet blooms bring to mind the values our mothers, fathers, grandparents, and great-grandparents taught us in their examples, stories, sacrifices, and lived experience. They remind us that virtue, charity, and Someone greater than ourselves--our Creator above--gives us every blessing we have.
