To Make it Through the Winter
Years ago, a baker friend of mine mentioned how hard it felt to "make it through the winter" in Maine. This friend is so upbeat and kind--always serving other people, always working hard to make life beautiful and delectable for others. I felt I had to paint something cheery for her kitchen that would whisk her thoughts away to some place tropical on those long snowy days of being Hobbit-holed up in the kitchen creating cake towers for weddings. So thinking of how so many Mainers flee to Florida in the months of February and March, I painted this cluster of oranges on the branch, dripping with dew and happy to hang in the sunshine. I hope it still brings Melissa a taste of the tropical as she rolls out fondant or creates five tiered wonders topped with pomegranates. And I hope it brings joy and fresh thoughts to you if it ends up hanging in your kitchen too...
